Surgical Options

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Why should I have the surgery if there are certain risks involved?
A:   There are risks associated with any surgery, but the risks of living with morbid obesity outweigh the risks of surgery. Bariatric surgery carries the same risks as all other forms of abdominal surgeries, such as bleeding, infection at the incision site, potential problems with heart and/or lungs, blockage of the intestine caused by adhesions, hernia through the incision, rejection of suture materials, and risks associated with general anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you.

Q:   How long will I be required to eat liquids or blended foods?
A:   You will need to stay on blended foods for several weeks. Our registered dietitian will help tailor the required soft foods to your particular liking, while at the same time providing you with the protein you need to remain healthy. You’ll gradually be able to go back to eating many of the healthy solid foods you once did. However, you’ll be unable to eat red meat, some breads, and starchy foods until your system is able to tolerate them.

Q:   How long does it take to schedule my surgery?
A:   This is a very individual process and is based on your personal health, insurance coverage and requirements, and health evaluations. It’s generally a 3- to 6-month process.

Q:   How long will I be in the hospital?
A:   On average, 2-3 days for gastric bypass patients; an overnight stay for most adjustable lap band patients.

Q:   When can I return to work?
A:   We recommend no heavy lifting, more than 20lbs., for the first 4 weeks. If your job requires no lifting limitations, then a 2-week minimum is suggested for gastric bypass. Lap band patients can return to work after one week.

Q:   What about hair loss?
A:   Approximately 3 to 6 months after surgery, 30% of patients may experience hair loss or thinning. Gentle hair care can minimize the loss.

Q:   When can I drive after surgery?
A:   No driving until your first office visit. If you continue with pain medications after the first week, driving should be avoided for 4 to 6 hours after taking the medicine.

Q:   What about pregnancy?
A:   Pregnancy should be avoided with either procedure for the first 18 months. If at any time you would become pregnant, please contact the program coordinator for further instructions.

Q:   When can I drink alcohol?
A:   We ask that you avoid alcohol intake for at least a year. Gastric bypass patients experience rapid absorption of alcohol, and, subsequently, may get drunk quickly. Also, alcohol is a high caloric intake for both bariatric procedures

Q:   What can I take for constipation?
A:   We recommend for both surgeries either mineral oil or colace (docusate sodium) as directed. Increase fluids and activity. Pain medications can lead to constipation.
